The Cross of Burgundy (Cruz de Borgona) is a flag and cross motif used by the Spanish Empire and in its colonies for several centuries. As a result the symbol, appearing as a “saw-toothed” red cross on a white background, appears on numerous flags and coats of arms around the world.
The Cross of Burgundy has become increasingly co-opted by far-right and nationalist groups in Spain and in countries that used to be part of the Spanish Empire. When used by these groups, the Cross of Burgundy is intended to represent an idealised traditionalist, imperialist European past. The cross of Burgundy appears in the logos of Active Clubs in both Spain and Colombia.
Given the Cross of Burgundy’s history and its frequent use in contemporary flags and emblems around the world, its use should always be carefully identified and evaluated in context.
