A triskelion is a spiral symbol featuring three “legs” radiating out from a central point. Versions and variations of the triskelion have been a frequent motif in ancient, medieval and modern architecture and art and symbolism across Europe.
A version of the triskelion was used on the insignia of the 27th Volunteer Grenadier Division Langemarck, a Waffen-SS division.
The version of the triskelion most frequently used by hate groups resembles three “sevens” around a central point. This version of the triskelion can be seen in symbols used by the neo-Nazi Afrikaner Resistance Movement (AWB) in South Africa as well as international neo-Nazi groups Blood & Honour and Combat 18.
The use of the triskelion by hate groups should not be confused with similar symbols used in non-hateful contexts. These include uses of triskelions from different historical and cultural contexts like the Sicilian flag or the Manx “three legs” symbol.
