The Prince’s Flag (Prinsenvlag) is a historical orange-white-blue flag that, in the 20th and 21st centuries, has become associated with the far right in the Netherlands and Flanders (northern Belgium).
The Prince’s Flag was first used in the 16th century, particularly during the Dutch Revolt against Habsburg rule. Over the next two centuries the flag remained in some use, though the current Dutch red-white-blue flag eventually became the country’s official flag.
Because of its historical use the Prince’s Flag and its colours appear in several contemporary flags that have no relation to hate groups, including a number of civic flags in the state of New York in the United States, which was originally colonised by the Dutch in the 17th century. As such, its appearance should always be carefully evaluated in context.
The Prince’s Flag and its colours first became associated with the far right in the Netherlands after the Dutch National Socialist Movement (NSB), a Dutch fascist party that collaborated with occupying Nazi German forces in the Netherlands between 1940 and 1945, began using them.
The flag and its colours continue to be used by far-right groups in the Netherlands and Belgium (Flanders), frequently appearing at far-right events and protests. In September 2025 a prominent Netherlands-based online retailer stopped selling the Prince’s Flag, given its association with the far right.
