“Defend Europe” is a phrase commonly used as an anti-immigration slogan in Europe.
The phrase was adopted by the far-right Identitarian movement as a slogan of its 2017 anti-immigration campaign “to monitor and disrupt humanitarian rescue ships operating in the Mediterranean Sea”. The phrase in English has become commonly used by the far right across the continent, including in environments and contexts where English is not the primary language.
The phrase “defend Europe” can appear in non-hateful contexts, i.e., in everyday public policy discussions in Europe unrelated to immigration. As such, its use should always be carefully identified and evaluated in context.
