“Noz, zica, Srebrenica” (Нож, жица, Сребреница in Serbian Cyrillic), translating as “knife, [barbed] wire, Srebrenica” is a slogan that mocks and celebrates the Srebrenica genocide.
In July 1995, during the Bosnian war, more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys were massacred by Bosnian Serb forces in and around the town of Srebrenica. The massacre has been recognised as a genocide in multiple international court cases, including criminal convictions for charges of genocide in the cases of Bosnian Serb military leader Ratko Mladic and Bosnian Serb political leader Radovan Karadzic.
The slogan has been chanted at football matches by Serbian football hooligans, and appears on social media as a post or hashtag. It is sometimes accompanied by the words “Bice repriza” (Биће реприза; “there will be repeat”).
In January 2021, a Serbian far-right fashion brand advertised products for sale featuring the first two words of the slogan alongside imagery of a knife and barbed wire; Serbian authorities banned the sale of the shirt on grounds of “inciting national, religious and racial hatred,” and the brand withdrew the products from sale.
