Emojis are small pictures used in everyday text communication on social media and instant messenger apps. Some common, everyday emojis can be employed in hateful contexts.
A “juice” emoji (🧃) can be used as an antisemitic symbol, given the similarity in pronouncation between “juice” and “Jews”
A “nose” emoji (👃) can be used as an antisemitic symbol
The lightning bolt emoji [⚡or ⚡⚡] is used by the far right and neo-Nazis as a reference to a Sig rune
The hand (✋) and raised hand (🙋) emojis are used by the far right and neo-Nazis as a reference to a Hitler or fascist salute
Given that these emojis are more often used in everyday, non-hateful contexts, their potential use as symbols of hate must always be carefully identified, interpreted and evaluated in context.
