The sun cross, or solar cross, has been a common symbol in prehistoric cultures across Europe. The symbol was co-opted and used as a far-right symbol during and after World War II.
The Norwegian Nazi-collaborating Nasjonal Samling party used a stylised sun cross as its party logo, as did the neo-Nazi British Movement in the decades after World War II.
This symbol can appear in non-hateful contexts, including by practitioners of pagan religions and beliefs, as well as by individuals with interests in pagan, Celtic, Nordic and Germanic cultures. As such, its use should always be carefully identified and evaluated in context.
The sun cross is similar to other symbols including the Celtic cross and a “broken” sun cross, which was used as an insignia of the 5th SS Panzer Division Wiking, a Waffen-SS division.
The sun cross is sometimes used by contemporary far right and neo-Nazi groups, for whom it is generally intended to represent “ancient” European heritage.
