“14/88” is a common number code used by hate groups.
Given that they frequently appear in everyday non-hateful contexts, the interpretation of these numbers should always be carefully considered in context.
The “14” refers to the Fourteen Words, a slogan coined by American neo-Nazi terrorist David Lane, who was sentenced to 150 years in prison for his role in the murder of Jewish talk show host Alan Berg in 1984.
“88” is a numerical code for “HH”, an abbreviation for “Heil Hitler”, H being the eighth letter of the alphabet.
The numbers 14/88, and sometimes 14 or 88 alone, are commonly used by hate groups in their propaganda and imagery, including in fashion, stickers and graffiti. “14” can appear written as “XIV” in Roman numerals in some propaganda and imagery.
