The Eureka flag is an Australian flag which features a southern cross on a blue background.
Given the Eureka flag’s past and present associations outside of non-hateful contexts, its appearance should always be carefully evaluated in context.
The flag was first flown during the Eureka Rebellion in 1854 by gold miners in what is now the state of Victoria who staged an armed rebellion against colonial government troops. The flag has since been used as a symbol of democracy and protest in Australia.
Though often associated with labour and left-wing movements in the country, the Eureka Flag has become increasingly co-opted by Australia’s far right, including being flown by neo-Nazis and white supremacists at marches and events as a protest symbol.
